Long Mat versus Short Mat Challenge

2021 Challenge

Its been a while coming back but on Sun 19th Dec 2021 the second friendly battle took place at Wey Valley.

West Surrey Association, comprising mostly outdoor bowlers pitted against a mixed short mat bowler team.

The format was slightly changed with 6 teams of 3 players playing the 10 ends of short mat , followed by 10 ends of long mat, the scores for the short mat being carried over to the long mat and the combined scores giving an overall winner.

The overall score was  178 - 77 in favour of the short mat bowlers.

The Short mat teams were :-

A very entertaining afternoon was had, topped off with a meal and trophy presentation.

I think the Longmatters will be out for revenge next year!!

2018 Challenge

The date is in the Diary for the 2018 battle between the disciplines,  the 16th December, to be played again at Wey Valley IBC.  I am sure the West Surrey indoor bowlers will be looking for revenge for last year.

2017 Challenge

Played on Sun 17th December 2017

After a few failed attempts to get this event booked there will be a "friendly" competition between the Indoor Long Mat bowlers, and Surrey's Short Mat bowlers, played over the two different disciplines, on the same day at Wey Valley Bowling Club.

The format will be - a number of rinks (4's) teams playing 10 ends on the Long Mat green at Wey Valley, followed by 10 ends  on the counties short mats.  The scores of all teams for both events will be combined and should decide an overall winner.

The results will be posted here once the outcome is known......

Well the results are in, and a most enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

After the 11 ends of long mat had been played the scores were definitely in favour of the long mat team, but following 10 ends of short mat bowling the scores had turned around and the final result was

Win for Short Mat 165 - 103.

Thanks to all the Surrey short mat bowlers who took part and to the West Surrey Association bowlers who made it a real battle.
